The Control Room

Everything you need to know about control rooms and the role of PSIM software in them. There are a lot of definitions of what a control room actually is. We will share our vision of how a central control room should look like, and what the main benefits Sky-Walker can have for your control room.

What is a Control Room?

A control room (or security operations centre) is a room that serves as a central control and monitoring station for security, safety, building and other types of control room system in a large physical facility or area. Physical facilities may be spread over several sites, cities, countries or even the world. In some cases, control may be part of a larger command centre (e.g. in military organisations).

Many critical processes and situations are managed either autonomously or by the control room operator(s). The control room operations can be, for example, the removal of doubt by video surveillance or the management of an incident by the incident manager.

The control room is like a monitoring room since it will mainly allow the teams to monitor and watch over the security of the building and the various systems.

What does a control room look like?

The control room setup is designed to enable the operators and the operations manager to carry out their tasks and control room operations.

Indeed, within the control room, there is a video wall on which the control room operators can view the building's video surveillance images in real time. Each operator has a workstation at which he or she carries out the operations coordinated by the head of operations.

Nowadays, the control room is a real security control room. In fact, a control room will serve as a cctv control room and will contain the cameras of the building systems connected to the video wall. These cameras are managed by the operators with a control room management software and thanks to this software, the operators can select the cameras they want to have on the video wall. The control room system used is video surveillance.

The cctv control room design must therefore provide direct visibility of the video wall to the operators and provide an individual workspace for each operator.

Who is involved within a control room?

To carry out your missions, your control room must have a certain amount of equipment, but not only that! The presence of operators is crucial because they will be in charge of operations. Everything is coordinated by the operations manager who supervises the operators' actions.
The control room management is carried out by the head of operation.

Security operators

The operator deals with all types of incidents that may occur in the different buildings! His aim is to manage them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The head of operations

The operations manager will allocate incidents to operators according to the priority of the incident and the number of incidents the operator is solving

Desks and monitors

Each operator has a personal workspace and works via a workstation. The workstations are set up in such a way that the operators view the video wall in real time.

Video wall

The video wall ensures an optimal view of all video sinks in order to visualise the overall situation of the buildings. In other words, the cameras of the buildings are visible on the video wall.

Microphone and headphones

Microphones and headsets are useful for communicating with other operators and the operations manager, but also with responders to an incident.

PSIM software

In a control room, it is favorable to ensure an optimal overview of all the video well in order to visualize the overall situation of the environment.

The usage of PSIM software within a control room

A central control room in a building is usually the most secure room in a company. It is not accessible to the general public, but only to authorised personnel. All the systems that need to be controlled, monitored and managed are connected to a wide range of technological equipment. A widely used term for the management of these systems is PSIM. The centralized control room becomes, with pism software, a real security control room!

The operators of the security control room are able to control and monitor these systems via control room management software such as psim. The main advantage of connecting physical systems to a psim is the ability to centralise. While many physical systems were previously located in buildings without a central connection, they could only be controlled by staff on site. This is very time-consuming and costly and is very inefficient, especially in a crisis situation where every second counts.

Another key advantage of a control room is the optimisation of situational awareness. In large organisations, the control room operators do not know all the buildings in the organisation. Predefined procedures, quick access to video surveillance systems, etc., allow operators to quickly gain a thorough understanding of each situation without leaving their seats.

Advantages of control room software

Full control

A central control room placed in a building ensures the security of all infrastructures. Security is visualized and optimized in real time thanks to the use of specific security control room software integrated in the different workstations.

Centralised platform

The security control room software better known as psim software allows users to centralize all the safety, security and comfort systems of the various infrastructures in a single software.

Fast procedure handling

The feedback of information occurs in real time. That information includes the state of the systems. Its operation allows the operator to orient himself to respond to the incident as quickly as possible.

Sky-Walker PSIM control room software

The PSIM software is the brain of the central control room. Without it, it would only be a skeleton. The software is capable of integrating and visualizing all security, safety and building systems into one central software platform. The platform is capable of communicating via a vast amount of protocols like Modbus, BACNet, OPC and so on.

By only using one software package, the training costs for the operators is cut down significantly as well. In certain projects, local clients need to be installed as well. The PSIM software can then also connect to it's local brother. These local clients are needed for the personnel on said location to control and monitor certain specific systems like the HVAC units or CCTV images.
